Find a screen in the Nova layout

Updated

In the Nova layout you open a screen from the menu tree in the left column, or by typing in the search palette (Ctrl+K). The tree shows one module at a time; the palette searches every module, your records, commands, and settings at once.

Note

Favorites and recent items are kept in your browser, for your user. They do not follow you to another computer. A module tree lists starred items from every module. Developer and Administrator list the starred items of that menu.

How to#

To open a screen from the menu, look at the left. The list of modules is always there: the ZuloOne mark on top is Home, then one icon per module, then Developer, Administrator, and Settings, and your avatar at the bottom. The ZuloOne mark stays in that slot when names are on and when a module menu is open. Point at an icon to see its name. Press the chevron (Show names) under the modules to write the names next to the icons; press Hide names to go back to icons only. Press a module: its menu slides out (the organisation logo is at the top of that menu; your name and role appear next to the avatar when names are on). Press an item of the tree to open it on a tab in the workspace; every item has its icon. The top bar shows where you are, for example the module, the section, and the screen. Each top-level section (Dictionaries, Documents, and so on) shows its own icon on a soft tile in the section's colour.

The menu closes after you pick an item, click outside, or press Escape. Press the pin at the top of the menu to keep it open beside the list; then the work area shrinks, and you can drag the right edge to change the width. Unpin it to go back to the overlay.

The tree has up to three blocks, in this order:

  • Favorites — items you starred. Press the heading to fold or unfold the list. Your choice is remembered.
  • Recent — the last eight items you opened from the tree. Press the heading to fold or unfold it.
  • Sections — the module's own items, then its groups. Each group shows how many items it holds. Press a group to fold or unfold it. Your choice is remembered. A group you never touched is open when it holds the screen you are on; with no such group, the first one is open.

To star an item, point at its row and press the star (Add to favorites). Press the filled star (Remove from favorites) to take it back.

Developer and Administrator in the left list open the same pages as the ribbon tabs, in the sliding menu. Those menus have the same star on each item and the same Favorites and Recent blocks. Settings opens the settings page directly. Press your avatar to sign out — settings are not in that menu.

To make a pinned menu wider or narrower, drag its right edge with the mouse (the edge lights up under the pointer). With the edge focused, the ← and → keys change the width in small steps, Home and End jump to the narrowest and the widest, and a double-click (or Enter) returns the default width. Your width is remembered in this browser. Unpinned, the list of modules stays a fixed width.

To search, press Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) or Search and commands… in the top bar. Both open the same palette. The palette opens with a field "Search menu, records, commands and settings…". The ribbon layout opens the same palette from its magnifier, with the same scope chips; the preview panel and the key line below are Nova only.

Type a few letters. Each word must match; a match in the item's name ranks above a match in its path or technical name, and the matching letters are marked. Results come in groups:

  • Menu — menu items, dictionaries, documents, registers, reports. An object that has a menu item is shown once, through that item, with its path.
  • Commands — commands that need no record and no selection. The hotkey, if the command has one, is on the right.
  • Settings — platform pages such as Settings.
  • Records — records of dictionaries, found by name or code. They are searched from two characters; before that the palette says "Type at least 2 characters to search records." when the Records scope is chosen.

Press ↓ and ↑ to move, Enter to open. Ctrl+Enter opens the item and keeps the palette on screen for the next jump. A record opens its card; a command runs.

To search one kind only, press Tab (or Shift+Tab to go back) or click a chip under the field: All, Menu, Records, Commands, Reports, Settings. With a chip chosen, up to 30 results are listed.

With an empty field the palette lists menu items with your favorites first and your recent items next, then a few commands and settings.

On a wide screen the palette has a Preview panel for the highlighted row: Type, Path, Shortcut, a button Open (Run for a command) and, for menu items, Add to favorites or Remove from favorites. The line at the bottom lists the keys: ↑ ↓ select, ↵ open, Ctrl ↵ open and keep this window, Tab filter by section.

The top bar also has Assistant, Notifications, Help (the list of keyboard shortcuts), the language picker, and a button that switches between the light and the dark theme.

On a phone or a small tablet the left columns are hidden. Press the menu button at the left of the top bar (Open the menu) to slide them in; the drawer closes after you open an item.

Example

Press Ctrl+K and type sales ord.

  • Under Menu, Sales orders is among the first results: both words match its name.
  • Press Enter. The sales order list opens on a tab and the palette closes.

Press Ctrl+K again, type sales ord, and press Ctrl+Enter instead: the list opens and the palette stays, ready for the next name.

Tip

Star the five screens you open every day. They sit at the top of the tree, and they come first in an empty palette.
