Work with a list in the Nova layout
Updated
In the Nova layout, document journals and dictionary lists get a strip above the table: view tabs that remember a set of filters and filter chips that show what is filtering the list. When you tick rows, a bulk pill floats over the table. Rows get Edit and Row actions buttons, and a document's state is a coloured pill.
Note
Saved views, like favorites in the menu, are kept in your browser for your user. Another computer starts without them. Other tables in the product, such as register reports, keep the classic look.
How to#
To work with a list, open a journal or a dictionary, for example Sales orders. The header shows the list name, how many records match (for example 24 records), and the buttons Print, Export, and a filled New. Edit, Clone, and Delete are not in the header: they are on each row and in the bulk bar.
Under the header are the view tabs, a segmented control. All is the list without filters. The tools on the right of the tabs are Find in list, Columns, Density (Compact, Normal, Comfort; the list starts in Comfort), and a refresh button (Refresh). Find in list opens a field; Esc clears it and closes it.
To filter, press Filter in the row of chips. A menu Filter by column lists the columns. Pick one, set the condition in the editor that opens (for example Contains or a list of values), and a chip appears: the column name and the condition, such as Subtype: Draft, Submitted. Click a chip to change it, press ✕ on it to remove it, or press Reset to remove all. A list of values longer than two is cut with a tail like +3.
In a document journal, the first chip is the picker for the period and the document states (All dates or a range, and the number of subtypes). It sits in the same row but is not a column filter.
To keep a filter, press Save view (or View next to the tabs). Type a name in View name and press Save. A new tab appears and is lit. The view keeps the filters, the sort, the columns you show, the density, and the other display settings of the table. It does not keep the text in Find in list or the period and states picker. Saving under an existing name overwrites that view.
Press a tab to apply that view at once. A tab is lit only while the list equals the view; change a filter, and no tab is lit until you save or press a tab again. All removes the filters and the sort but keeps your columns. The active tab shows the number of matching records. To delete a view, press ✕ on its tab (Delete view).
To act on several rows, tick them (the circle at the left of the row; hold Ctrl to tick more than one). The ticked rows turn green and a dark pill floats over the bottom of the table: Selected: 2, then up to four command buttons — the first one that can run is filled green — ⋯ for the rest, and ✕. The pill covers no controls: the view tabs, the list tools and the filter chips stay where they were, and the table does not move; while the selection lasts the table scrolls a little further, so the last rows are never stuck under the pill. The commands that can run on this selection come first; a command that needs exactly one row is greyed out when you tick three. To untick all, press Esc or ✕.
To act on one row, point at it. At the right end of the row appear Edit (a pencil) and Row actions (⋯). Row actions opens the same menu as a right click: Edit, Clone, Delete, and the commands and tools of that list.
In a document journal the Subtype column is a status pill: a soft tint, a coloured dot and the state name. The colour follows the document's place in its workflow: grey for the first state, blue for the second, purple for the steps between, green for the last one, and red for an outcome outside the main path (for example a cancelled document). When the document has three or more states on its main path, the Progress column next to it draws the same place as a bar with one segment per state: green for the states passed (all of them once the last state is reached), the accent colour for the current one, grey for the rest. A cancelled document shows an empty bar. A field the author tagged avatar or avatar:person shows a coloured badge with initials in front of its value (see the developer page).
At the bottom the list says, for example, Loaded 40 of 118. Rows load as you scroll down the list; there are no page numbers.
Example
Open Sales orders.
- Press Filter → Subtype, tick Draft. The chip Subtype: Draft appears and the record count drops to the drafts only.
- Press Save view, type
My drafts, press Save. The tab My drafts is lit.- Press All: the filter goes, the tab All is lit. Press My drafts and the same filter returns.
- Tick two drafts (hold Ctrl). The dark pill says Selected: 2. Press Esc to clear.
Tip
Make one view per question you ask every day — "Drafts", "This week", "Unpaid" — and delete the ones you stop using. A view costs nothing but a tab.
If the command refuses#
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| No tab is lit | The list no longer equals any saved view, because you changed a filter, the sort, or the columns. Press Save view to keep it, or press a tab to go back. |
| The view comes back without the period or the document states | These live in the period and states picker, not in the view. Set them again. |
| View and Save view are not there | This list cannot store views. Use the filters directly. |
| A command in the bulk pill is greyed out | It needs a different number of rows, usually exactly one. Tick one row. |
| Edit, Clone, or Delete is missing in the header | In the Nova layout they are in Row actions and in the bulk pill. |
| Quick search is missing | It is called Find in list and sits at the right of the tabs. |
| The list shows fewer rows than the record count in the header | Scroll down; more rows load. The line at the bottom (Loaded 40 of 118) shows how many are in. |
| A chip shows a technical name instead of a caption | The column is hidden or no longer in the list. The chip still filters; press ✕ to remove it. |
